Baal is a Semitic word that means "lord" or "master" and was used to refer to various gods in ancient Near Eastern religions. In particular, Baal was the name applied to the god worshipped by the Canaanites and the Phoenicians. This god was considered to be the lord of the storms, rain, and fertility, and was depicted as a bull or a man with a bull's head. Baal was one of the most important gods in the Canaanite religion and his worship was often tied to the fertility of the land and the success of crops. Although the worship of Baal declined with the rise of Christianity and Islam, some modern pagan groups still venerate him as a deity.
